American Beauties #1

Spondylus Americanus

I decided to paint my “American Beauties” series because I love spiny oysters. I’m far from being the only admirer! as these shells are coveted by enthusiasts worldwide. They’re indigenous to the Americas, with many of the largest, most lovely specimens collected in South Florida. In American Beauties #1, I selected some unusual specimens with beautiful color combinations. I found it particularly fascinating that the umbone, or area near the “hinge”, could be one brilliant color while the spines were quite another! Those intense orange specimens with pink or purple spines offered a nice contrast to the pristine white or solid yellow varieties – all showcased against a light, watery background.
